Vince Cable comments on Office for Fair Access's decisions on 2013-14 Access Agreements

Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills Vince Cable said:

“The Government is determined that no-one with the ambition and ability, whatever their background, should come up against barriers to accessing higher education.

“Universities will be investing over £670 million in attracting students from disadvantaged backgrounds by 2016/17, over quarter of their fee income above basic fee levels. While it is encouraging to see this commitment to access, progress in securing fair access to the most selective universities has been slow so it is vital that this investment translates into results.”

Universities and Science Minister David Willetts went on to say:

“Applications from students from disadvantaged backgrounds for 2012 entry are holding up well. Now we want more progress in widening access and improving retention and we have tasked OFFA with helping universities to identify what works best.

“We want universities to be genuinely ambitious with their plans for attracting people from low income backgrounds. Our reforms are delivering significantly more investment in outreach, retention and financial support for disadvantaged students. Both the proportion and amount of higher level fee income devoted to widening access will increase significantly from 2012/13.”
