The importance of creating a great Candidate experience

The overall experience a candidate has when applying for a job influences which offer they accept and which business they chose to work for.

In this candidate short market it is surprising that some employers do not pay enough attention to creating a positive candidate experience. Candidates talk, they will tell their friends and colleagues how they felt they were treated and what their impressions were of their potential employer. They will talk about the company that got back to them quickly after interview in a positive light even if they didn’t get the job. The reverse is true if the feedback is slow or even non-existent. Keeping candidates waiting for interviews with no opportunities for refreshments or asking inappropriate questions are the kind of things that have a negative impact and are likely to make the applicant walk away thinking “If that’s how they treat people – do I really want to work there?”

According to research conducted recently by the REC there are two main areas where businesses get it wrong: Not keeping candidates informed during the process; and simply how the candidate felt during the whole journey. Just over half said they didn’t feel they were treated like an individual. Some clear and consistent lessons were learned from this research - making sure your website and employer brand is attractive and explains what your process would be like when candidates apply, actively managing their expectations. Making job requirements clear, ensuring line managers are trained and work to agreed recruitment processes and deadlines. Good communication throughout the process is key but who makes sure makes this happens? Only 11% of employers ask for candidates feedback on what the applicants think of their recruitment process, this helps to instil a continuous improvement mentality.
