Louises Column - Uncertainity Remains After Brexit Despite Growth.



Despite the uncertainty around Brexit the UK Plc is in better shape than predicted and many businesses are expecting and want to grow….but they worry that the shortage of the right people to fill their vacancies might hold back that growth. Nearly 50% of employers expect to see a shortage of suitable candidates for permanent roles in at least one job function.

In line with the national picture, Hewett Recruitment are finding that Temps and contract workers are in big demand – seeing those divisions expand considerably within their own business… something they see happening every time there is uncertainty about what is going to happen next in the economic and political landscape. Many temps gradually get taken on permanently as the picture becomes clearer – so it is a great stepping stone into full employment.

Louise Hewett commented in a recent speech at the H&W Chamber Business Expo,  “We work with many employers across the region and I do have some concerns.  Brexit hasn’t happened yet and most of our clients are still growing. We are good at creating jobs in the private sector, but will we maintain the flexibly and the ability to fill these jobs post Brexit. We hope the government will find a sensible solution to enable our businesses to attract and employ the skills they need from wherever they can be recruited.”

She continued…. “But what about blue collar workers. We don’t seem to be hearing much about these people who keep the wheels turning – the assemblers, the pickers, the packers, the labourers our businesses need to meet production demands.  Across Herefordshire & Worcestershire and beyond, I can tell you that these organisations rely on fairly significant numbers of workers from our friends in Europe. They are not taking jobs from anyone and they are not being treated any differently to their British colleague working alongside them. I know we have heard some isolated horror stories, but these are isolated cases. The real worry is that we are already hearing reports of them going home – they don’t feel welcome – there’s too much uncertainty.

So who will replace them? I’m not sure the government have really addressed this yet and I’m not sure they really understand the value of the flexible labour market we enjoy in the UK and the value these people bring to our factories, fields, hospitals and restaurants etc.”
