Louise's Column - 50+ Skills Team

Since August last year, Hewett Recruitment have offered an age positive route into employment through the new ‘50+ skills team‘.  Brian Thornton who runs the commercial temp desk at the Kidderminster office has been proactively working with clients to emphasise the skills on offer from the 50+ team. These candidates are proving invaluable in a people short market. Brian explained “We have been encouraging people over 50 to come and join us and realise that their skills and experience are very much needed amongst local employers who appreciate being able to call on the expertise they need on a flexible basis.”

He continued “Some of our team run their own small businesses and boost their income through temping. Flexibility is the key – people usually have a portfolio of jobs that offer the flexibility they are looking for. The good news is that our talented team of temps and contractors used to be comprised of 15% over 50 yrs but since we launched this initiative we now have 50 % over 50’s enjoying temporary work that suits their needs.”

The more mature person can often feel under confident and unsure particularly if they’ve had a break in employment. Hewett offer candidates free software refresher training that can be accessed in their own time on their home computer. One of the 50+ skills team Sally explained how important it is not to be scared of technology. “It really can be your friend, I have never had any formal IT training and yet have made my living online for the past 6 or 7 years.  Sure there can be some tough learning curves but my advice would be not to give up at the first hurdle and when you get stuck – don’t be afraid to ask.”  Sally also commented how important it is to keep an open mind to doing new things.  “As a more mature person we bring a lifetime of experience - don’t undervalue it!”
