Lean and Green Manufacturing.

Today I’ve been involved in a Webinar focusing on Lean & Green Manufacturing, which included guest speakers from some of the UK’s leading Food & Drink manufacturers/processors.

Lean and Green Manufacturing seems to be a very HOT TOPIC in 2016, and is something that retailers (especially M&S) are focusing on to become one of their suppliers. Lean & Green focuses on factors including Food & Water Wastage, Energy Usage and Savings, Other Liquid Wastage and Pollution.

The seminar focused on engaging staff and identifying the steps that need to be taken to reduce the above factors, and how these issues can be targeted as a team. A spokesperson from a major FMCG competitor spoke of planning and strategic tactics, which included the following:

  • Identifying how much cost/money is thrown away each year/month on wastage.
  • Working together as a cross-functional team, mapping out plans together.
  • Creating KPIs focusing on the above factors.
  • Giving staff the responsibility as a department.
  • Developing a team of Lean and Green Champions to focus on the factoring areas.

A case study was also discussed, which conveyed that Lean & Green Manufacturing has an overall positive effect on the company as well as the environment, which I’m sure you can agree is a beneficial selling point of any business.

As a FMCG specialist I found the seminar extremely beneficial. It allowed me to keep on top of key developments that are occurring within the sector, which I can therefore use as discussion points when speaking with new and existing clients and other FMCG specialists.
I think it’s fundamental for a specialist recruitment consultant like myself to keep up to date with the day-to-day market, current trends and hot topics as it really gives a strong understanding of the market, what is happening within it; and what I can do to help.
