IT / Computing Graduate Employability

It’s a great time to be an IT / Computing graduate! Now the UK Economy is firmly into recovery, companies are investing more in PEOPLE!

The UK is suffering a shortage in skilled IT and technical people – there are currently more vacancies than skilled people! And this is a growing problem for businesses.

So if you have finished, or are about to finish Uni with a degree in IT or Computing, then you are in a fantastic position to secure your dream job! In the local Worcestershire & West Midlands area, we are working with a number of exciting, expanding businesses, who are keen to take on graduates for software development positions. Key skills they are looking for are C#,,, PHP and Java.

However, it’s not as simple as ticking a box of the skills you possess and walking into that fantastic job.

So even if you have all the skills required, businesses want to employ individuals who will fit into the culture of their business, get on with colleagues and clients, AND have the drive and enthusiasm to make things happen.

It is expensive for a business to train up a new employee, particularly a grad with limited commercial experience. So the thing they look for most is someone with the right attitude; a strong communicator; someone who will remain loyal to their business for some time, rather than moving after a year.

So, my top tips for IT graduates looking to get into a development position are:
  • Include a ‘Key skills’ section at the top of your CV, to make it easy for employers / recruiters to understand what you can do.
  • Include details on all relevant projects completed during your degree / self study / internships / work experience.
  • Showcase your personality (in a professional way) – by including interests / extra-curricular activities / sports on your CV and social media platforms.
  • Always proof read and check your CV for typo’s.
  • Set up an online portfolio of work to show employers / recruiters.
  • Ask me for access to FREE skills testing. Our industry-recognised skills tests are specific to the technology you work with e.g. PHP 5.4 / 3.5 / C# 4.0 and can be included with job applications to give more evidence of your level.
  • Get out there! It’s easier to find a job when you’re in one, so the more freelancing you can do to build up your experience, the better. And while you’re looking for a permanent opportunity, try some temp work to keep your finances in check – pop into our Worcester branch and speak to Jennie.
I’m more than happy to talk to graduates about career prospects, so even if you’re not sure what direction is best to take, give me a call or send me an email.
