How to build the best jobs market in the world

It has been a strong year in the UK job market and skills shortages are beginning to have an impact on pay packets. Although the economy appears to be strengthening and employers are certainly hiring more people, there are areas of uncertainty both globally and nationally. The political situation is at the forefront of some of that uncertainty with the forthcoming general elections looming.

Each of the political parties will be setting out what they plan to do in the labour market. At the Recruitment & Employment Confederation we will be taking forward a bold vision for the next government:- How to build the best jobs market in the world.

Our core message focuses on four key areas –
1. Give everyone the chance to succeed at work
2. Accelerate business growth and job creation through skills
3. Build the best local jobs market through partnerships and SME access
4. Enhance our position in the global marketplace

Career advice should be available at every stage of life, providing ‘all ages’ guidance to help those returning to the labour market, starting a business or making a career transition. A world class jobs market is one that fully embraces different ways of working. Employment flexibility offers numerous benefits to individuals as well as employers. The notion that flexible work always represents a ‘casualisation’ of the workforce must be challenged. 59% of those who have a permanent contract and 40% of people currently earning 30k+ have worked as an agency worker, contractor or freelancer and 22% of 50k+ have also worked as an agency worker. People who work part-time are attracted to this option for different reasons and at different times of their lives – young people , those approaching retirement , people with caring responsibilities and individuals with niche specialist skills are most likely to want to work this way. The manifesto asks the next government to prioritise its support for individuals who need to work flexibly. For more info visit www.rec.uk.com
