FIT FOR WORK SCHEME

You will recall the below bulletin in relation to the Fit for Work Scheme.

“EMPLOYERS CAN NOW MAKE FIT FOR WORK REFERRALS

The roll out of the Fit for Work service is now complete meaning that employers and GP’s across England, Wales and Scotland can refer employees to the service for a free occupational health assessment.

The trigger for referral is 4 weeks’ absence (including self-certified absence) or longer. A GP may refer earlier if they consider that the employee will be absent for 4 weeks and that a referral may be beneficial. An advisor from the Fit for Work service will then carry out an occupational health assessment usually over the phone unless it is necessary to have a face-to-face meeting and will provide the employee with a return to work plan. An employee can only be referred for 1 assessment in any 12 month period.

There is guidance for employers, employees and GP’s produced by the DWP however employers should now take this opportunity to review their sickness absence procedures and ensure that these are updated to incorporate the new Fit for Work scheme. Managers and senior staff should also be made aware of this process.”

Employers are therefore reminded to check their sickness absence policies to ensure that they provide for the new Scheme.

Please contact Sally Morris on 01905 734032 or by email at sally.morris@mfgsolicitors.com if you would like to discuss updating your employment policies in this regard.
