Hewett Legal Corner - October 2014 #21

A recent article published by HR Review asked the question .... How good are you at identifying disengaged employees?  Within the article, they share an info-graphic created by Office Vibe showing employers how to identify the key traits demonstrated by individuals who are disengaged in the workplace.

Disengaged employees show obvious signs such as complaining constantly but the article states that "employees never asking questions (and so never wanting to learn new things)" can also be a sign of disengagement.

13 Key traits of disengaged employees
  • Complain - Bad employees are always complaining, and nothing is ever good enough for them.
  • Makes Excuses - Bad employees never take responsibility for their actions and always find an excuse.
  • Lack Enthusiasm - When a new task or project comes up, this employee is always the least excited.
  • Doesn't Help Others - They're always saying "it's not my job", and are never willing to go above and beyond.
  • Gossip - Gossip destroys morale and the team dynamic, and creates cliques within the company.
  • Liar - An employee that lies and makes up stories is really dangerous for the team.
  • Know-It-All - Bad employees act like they know everything and are too good for whatever you have to say.
  • Independent - Employees are set on working alone, you need collaboration to thrive as a team.
  • Irresponsible - Employee often miss deadlines, are late for work and break their promises.
  • No Initiative - Good employees take initiative, where as a bad one just stands around waiting to be told what to do next.
  • No Questions -  Poor employees aren't willing to ask questions and learn new things.
  • Distracted - Good employees know how to stay focused, and bad employes are easily distracted.
  • No Growth - They don't invest in themselves to become better people and grow within the company.
Disengaged employees don't support a good company culture.
