Health in The Workplace

In the past measures taken by employers to improve workplace health may have been seen as ‘perks’ or employee benefits.

Today as businesses grow along with demand for high quality employees, more UK employers are putting health & wellbeing on the ‘Corporate Agenda’.  A growing number of employees are adopting measures aimed at promoting and reinforcing healthier working practices and lifestyle choices.

 The workforce is working longer, an aging working population presents challenges for employers and needs to be carefully considered to be managed successfully.

 Healthier people tend to be happier and more productive.  Most adults spend a large proportion of their lives in the workplace and many employers across Worcestershire are choosing to support and play a vital role in improving the health and wellbeing of their people throughout Worcestershire Works Well programme.

This may include ongoing workplace health promotion, raising on awareness of particular health issues and supporting employees to make healthier lifestyle choices.  The benefits of investing in a range of initiatives include getting employees back to work early, prompt access to diagnosis, early intervention and medical treatment.

 One local organisation Orchard Healthcare (previously known as Worcestershire Hospitals Contributors Association) has been around for nearly 100 years providing affordable benefits to thousands of employees in some of the leading employers across Worcestershire.

 This low cost example helps employees gain prompt access to treatment in areas like physiotherapy, chiropody, screening, diagnostic procedure and helps with the cost of dental, optical care, day surgery and hospital inpatients grants.

 Most employees consider healthcare to be one of the most important and attractive employee benefits. Surveys have shown that offering health benefits improves retention and lowers absenteeism.  Keeping our people happy and well – has got to be good business and how that is delivered can vary depending on the nature of your organisation. One of Hewett’s latest health initiatives is workplace massage – personally, I can’t wait for mine!
