Engaging IT graduates to combat skills shortage

As part of its aim to keep local talent employed here within Worcestershire, recruitment firm Hewett Recruitment is working to engage graduates.

The current skills shortage is widely documented and is one of the highest in the field of IT, so the recruitment company is targeting Worcestershire based IT graduates to encourage them to seek employment locally, and keep their skills here in Worcestershire.
Laura Hewett is based at the company’s Worcester office in Foregate Street and is heading up activities linked with IT graduates. “We are working very hard to encourage students not to leave the city or county once they have graduated,” Laura explains. “We are using various initiatives to try and engage with them and keep them up to date with interviewing skills, CV content and presentation and lots of information that will be practical and useful as they seek graduate employment.”

Laura authors a graduate IT blog and hosts a discussion group for IT graduates on LinkedIn. She has spoken on related subjects to groups of students at the University of Worcester. Hewett Recruitment has an official advisory role to the University.

“By communicating with IT graduates through my blog or LinkedIn, I can help keep them informed and advised on effective routes to employment,” says Laura. “Clearly, we want to keep their new skills and talent here in Worcestershire so it benefits our economy and skills base on our doorstep too.”
