REC Jobs Outlook survey - November 2012

According to the November Jobs Outlook survey conducted by the REC, employer confidence has grown as jobless and claimant numbers fall. Overall business optimism in the economy improved slightly and 54% of employers surveyed predicted some growth in permanent headcount over the next three months. The Lloyds bank monitor of employer sentiment gives an insight into the current psychology of UK business.  It also reports that confidence in the economy has gone up, but confidence in their own prospects has gone down.  This sentiment is the opposite of the ‘I’m alright Jack’ syndrome.  Employers believe there is a change but are not altogether sure if it has reached them yet.

Job prospects for graduates are better than feared as the employment rate for new graduates remains relatively stable according to research recently published by the Higher Education Careers Services Unit.  IT graduates have seen an increase of 8.5% in the proportion of those employed in computer science and IT.  Nearly half [47.3%] of those who studied the subject and were in employment became IT professionals.  In engineering, 65.8% of employed mechanical engineering graduates, 36.2% of electrical and electronic graduates and almost three in five civil engineering graduates were all working as engineering professionals in January 2012, six months after graduation.

Charlie Ball Deputy Research Director of the HECSU explained “When graduates from 2011 left university, the labour market was difficult, as the UK economy struggled with negative growth.  In spite of this, over 166,000 of last year’s graduates were known to be working in the UK, nearly 8000 more than the previous year.”
Our own consultants have seen a bumper year in permanent placements. Demand for specialist skills in particular, including engineering and IT have seen a significant rise across our Worcestershire clients.
